License

COMPAS is free software, distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later (LICENSE).

What the license requires

Running COMPAS and publishing results obtained with it places no obligation on you under the license. The license applies when you distribute COMPAS or a modified version of it. Citing the papers on Citing COMPAS is requested but is not a condition of the license.

Additional permission for GPU toolkits and MPI

COPYRIGHT adds one permission to the license, under section 7 of the GPL. You may convey COMPAS, or a work based on it, linked or combined with the NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit, AMD ROCm, the Intel oneAPI toolkits or any implementation of MPI (or a modified version of any of these), including proprietary ones. The exact wording is in COPYRIGHT.

AMReX

COMPAS is built on AMReX, which is obtained separately and is not distributed with COMPAS. Parts of four COMPAS files are derived from the AMReX example Tests/Amr/Advection_AmrCore and are used under the AMReX BSD license. THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md lists those files and reproduces the AMReX license and notice.
